Basic Vanilla Custard

Indulge in the creamy, smooth sweetness of classic vanilla custard. Enjoy it plain or use as a filling for pastries, donuts, or your favorite cake!

Ingredients
  

  • 6 large egg yolks
  • cup sugar
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¼ cup corn starch
  • cups whole milk
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp vanilla
  • 2 tbsp butter

Instructions
 

  • In a large pot, whisk together egg yolks, sugar, salt, and cornstarch until lump free. Whisk in the milk and heavy cream.
  • Place pot over medium-high heat, whisking constantly, until it begins to thicken. Cook while whisking for an additional minute or two. Remove from heat and stir in the butter and vanilla.
  • Transfer to a container and press a sheet of plastic wrap onto the surface to prevent a skin from forming. Chill in the refrigerator until firm.
  • You can use this for a fruit custard, in pastries/donuts, to layer cakes, or even spread it on toast!
